Running update…

First of all, I finally got my official time from my first 5K the other day: I came in 82nd place, out of 214 runners, in 34 minutes, 29 seconds. To which I say, meh. I mean, great that I made my goal time (I wanted under 35 minutes) but I’ve run 3.11 miles in 34 minutes flat before. I should’ve run a bit faster.

Runner-2They sent me this pic, which is the only non-blurry pic of me running. Not the most flattering tho. I think it might be time for a new sports bra?

I guess I have an opportunity to beat my time though, as yesterday I finally signed up for this:

hfrJune 4th, which is only 3 weeks away. Whoa.

I kind of felt the need to register for a 5K because I’ve been feeling really unmotivated lately. I’m still working on Bridge to 10K but today is only week 2 day 3… last week I only ran 2 days. I used to run 4 times a week! I think it’s a combination of it getting really hot (and it’s only going to get worse, I know) and my being so drained from the craziness that is the last few weeks of school. I’ve been thinking of getting a handheld water bottle to start taking on my runs… think that’s okay? Any recommendations?

Meanwhile, I’m about to cave and buy my Garmin, I’m getting so annoyed with running with my iPhone. I’m having to literally force myself to not buy it, as I know I’ll be getting an amazon gift card within the next 2 weeks and that can go towards my purchase. It’s just that lately my apps on my iPhone aren’t recording my distance/pace correctly… and this is information I’d like to KNOW. The other day on my run I thought I was flying cuz according to my phone, I was running 8 minute miles… which I NEVER do. I get home and realize that both my apps lied to me and I have no idea what distance I’ve been running at… one said 3.3 miles (including warmup and cooldown, I KNOW I did more than that) and the other said 5 miles (I WISH I could run 5 miles in 45 minutes). Sigh.

One day you will be mine, my pretty, one day… Maybe… I’m still debating between the 610 and the 310… Hmmm.

I will say that the great news is that I am finally running without pain, again. My ankle is finally better, my knee woes are gone (although sometimes I think my IT bands around my knees feel a bit tight, but that usually passes) and I’m feeling pretty good when I run lately. I did have to purchase some Body Glide over the weekend cuz I was starting to experience some um.. chafing. Yes, my thighs are trying to tell me I need to quit eating all the yummy foods that I’ve been overindulging in lately – ice cream, brownies, cookies, etc. The day after work is over I’m going to work on eating healthy again.. I’d say I’d start now but the end of the school year = lots of treats that I just can’t say no to.

And finally, I leave you with this shirt that I found yesterday, thanks to a link from The Hungry Runner Girl (love her!):

your pace or mine Cracks me up every time I see it!

If I’m wrong for wanting that shirt, I don’t want to be right. 🙂

Weekend randomness…

The highlight of my weekend (which went by way too fast, what’s up with that anyway?) is that yesterday I managed to run a full 3.02 miles. Once again, the farthest I’ve ever run but also it makes me feel a little bit better about signing up for a 5K. I am pretty confident that within the next 13 days (ack!) I can add an extra .08 of a mile to my runs and therefore finish when the day comes. I hope. Let’s not talk about how LONG it took to run that far, but it doesn’t even really matter I guess. My first goal is distance. Time will come eventually, I think.

This weekend I also bought the magazine Runner’s World for the first time. I felt like such a poser. Wait, is it spelled poseur now?

photo 2 One day I’m gonna look like Kara Goucher. Not really.

I also went into Academy to see if they had any cute workout clothes that I needed (thankfully for my wallet, they did not) and found an mp3-compatible top. Um, what? Yeah it was all normal until I turned it to the other side and found this:

photo 1 A friend said it looked like something.. well not suitable for this blog. I’ll leave that to your imagination.

So you slip in your iPod nano and run with it? I feel like I’d end up with my nano beating up my back while I run. That would be less than fun. Besides, nanos are so… a few years ago. I ended up giving my hot pink one away to someone in need (although sometimes I kinda want it back because it was so cute). If I ever have money (and this would have to be AFTER buying my Garmin, siiiigh so basically I’ll never have money), I’m snagging one of these:
sony w Hello awesomeness. Also know as the Sony W-Series Walkman MP3 Player. Drool.

And finally, there are pretty blooms everywhere. This isn’t really new, it’s been spring since February here in Texas, but I still love looking at flowers. Especially when it’s at a random location, like walking into Target.

photo 1 At first I thought it was a magnolia tree but now I’m not so sure.

photo 2 This flower looks a bit sad what with the brown edges. Aw.

And that was my weekend. So how was yours? 🙂

Happy ending and latest obsession…

I first have to give a quick update on my missing driver’s license story from the other day. Yesterday I received in the mail… my missing driver’s license. Some kind-hearted stranger found my driver’s license in the parking lot and mailed it back to me. Isn’t it wonderful to know that there are still good people out there?

Meanwhile. Oh dear. If you know me, you probably know that I like new gadgets. Also, that I tend to get obsessed over things. Kind of a wicked combination, because then I obsess about something that I can’t afford until I buy it.. even though I still couldn’t afford it.

Which leads me to my newest obsession: a Garmin watch. For a few weeks now I’ve been thinking how handy it would be – I currently use 2 apps on my iPhone (Nike+ GPS and the C25K one) but I don’t feel that they’re very reliable and the more I get into running, the more I think that I would benefit from having a GPS watch MADE for running. Plus, I’d like to know officially how many calories I’m burning each run, since I’ve been tracking my nutrition closely lately. I would like to be able to see my run pace in real time without having to twist my arm around to catch sight of my iPhone on my arm band (and inevitably whenever I try to get a peek at my pace, that’s when the app tends to suddenly say that it’s 0, which strikes me as strange since I’m definitely moving). I would like to to be told at the end of each mile what my pace was for that distance, so that I can know if I need to slow down or speed up a bit. Plus now that I’m focusing on my running distances (without including warmup and cooldown) it would be nice to just push a button on a watch to start logging my run, instead of starting up the Nike+ app while I’m warming up… I tend to get dizzy and start it too soon or too late.. And finally, when I upload all my run information to my laptop, I would like for it to actually be accurate.

I had my heart set on getting the Garmin 405CX, I already have nearly half the money saved up (thanks swagbucks, for the amazon gift cards!) and I decided I wanted to buy it after finishing my first 5K, as a reward (technically I would like it FOR my first 5K but I haven’t saved up that much yet, sigh). And then the other day Garmin announced their latest watch… the Forerunner 610, which is a touchscreen:

I immediately blew it off after seeing the cost and the fact that it was touchscreen (I tend to fight my iPhone when I am typing on it and seriously miss real keys most days) but then I read the review. And another review. And realized that it seemed to perform better than the 405, which has a bezel instead of buttons that seems to be more frustrating than helpful. And now I’m completely obsessing about it because now I WANT IT.

Now I know what you’re thinking. You don’t need it. It’s too much money. You’d be better off with the older version. You can just use your iPhone. You’re not serious enough of a runner yet to warrant having it. Yeah, okay, sure. But. I’ve now been running for 2 months, which is longer than I ever have in the past, and the fact that I signed up for my first 5K shows that I’m still dedicated to this. Maybe it’ll help me get better, maybe it’ll merely help keep me motivated enough to continue running. Either way, I think it’s a good investment… Now I just need to save up the money. Retails for $349.99. On sale May 6th. Heaven help my wallet. And my patience, which I seriously am lacking as I want it now!
